Why is the Indiana Green Industry Important to the US Economy?
According to Purdue University’s latest update on The Economic Contributions of the Indiana Green Industry, the green industry remains an import contributor to the U.S. economy.
The green industry is a vast and diverse sector that involves businesses engaged in:
- production, distribution, and use of plants and related products and services
- cultivating and utilizing landscape and floral crops
- suppling equipment and materials
- landscape design
- installation
- maintenance
Since the most recent survey conducted in 2013, the U.S. green industry has seen a growth of:
- 17.3% in sales revenue
- 16.2% in employment
- 19.8% in GDP
At the regional level, the Midwest emerged as the leading contributor with 465,263 jobs and $73.8 billion in sales revenue.
In 2018, Indiana ranked 20th in the United States with:
- $6.9 billion in output
- 45,701 jobs
- $3.8 billion in value added.

Turfgrass Industry
The impact of the turfgrass industry nationally is valued at $57.9 billion. For Indiana, the turfgrass industry can be calculated as $1.426 billion.
Among individual sectors:
- Indiana sod producers created nearly 21.6 million in output impacts, $12.3 million in value added, and 169 jobs at 38 sod farms.
- Indiana lawn equipment manufacturers contributed $257.6 million in output, $74.9 million in value added, and supported 924 jobs in 12 manufacturing locations.
- The Indiana lawncare goods retailing sector produced $249.7 million in output impacts, contributed $157.4 million in value added, and sustained 5,571 jobs.
- The lawncare services (LCO) sector generated nearly $383 million in output impacts, $249 million in value added, and 4,453 jobs at Indiana’s estimated 798 LCOs.
- Golf courses had $513.7 million in output impacts, $311.8 million in value added, and 5,324 jobs at Indiana’s 334 golf courses.
- Sports turf is not classified or included in the attached survey. This is tough to estimate as it is spread across public and private schools, municipal and private land. Further, grounds and parks maintenance is tough to separate from sports turf from an economic perspective.
